Inspired by the Impressionists, Don’s primary focus over the past several years has been on plein aire - painting directly from life. After attending an abstract show, however, his love of design and color rekindled an earlier avenue. “I began to simplify the landscape in front of me – and became more and more excited about changing the shapes and colors into an abstract expression.”
Whether landscape, still life, figure, or abstract, he continues to use color, texture, and imagination to evoke the beauty in and around him.
He integrates into his work a variety of techniques learned from such teachers as Charles Slovek, E.G. Principato, Gay Faulkenberry, John Kilroy, Ken Auster, Lois Griffel, Margaret McWethy, Randall Sexton, and Rob Longley.
Combined with the fine art studies at the MFA School, Mass College of Art and the Art Institute of Boston, Don’s experience as a technical illustrator for the Apollo guidance system, mainframe computers, pacemakers, and other contemporary projects has enhanced his ability to convey his vision onto the canvas. His paintings reside in collections throughout the US and Europe.
